Michael, 42, is one of three brothers who run Darts Farm Shop at Topsham, described by one reviewer as “like finding Selfridge’s food hall in a field near Exeter”. He lives in Topsham and has four children – George, 12, twins Maddie and Josie, 11, and Kitty, seven.

One food critic recently said Darts Farm was the biggest farm shop in the world – is it? I don’t know, but one thing’s for sure, we certainly have expanded a lot from the days when mum and dad sold potatoes from a shed by the side of the road. Someone told me recently that they still have that shed in their garden. I’d quite like to buy it back as a historical relic.

You run the business now with your brothers Jim and Paul. Do you ever fall out? Honestly no, we never have major rows. We are very well-structured: Paul runs the farming side, Jim is in charge of making the food hall run smoothly and I look at longer-term strategy. The one to watch, though, is our mum Enid, now 77

Lane is still plagued by problem potholes

Lane is still plagued by problem potholes

0 Comments | Bury Free Press (Bury St. Edmunds, England), Jan 8, 2010

Homeowner John Atkins, of North Common, is still involved in a long-running battle for remedial roadworks and an insurance payout, after his car was damaged last June.

In October, Suffolk County Council acknowledged that it was responsible for maintaining Western Bury Lane, which leads to Mr Atkins’ home, after initially saying the road was unadopted and therefore not its responsibility.

The council promised remedial roadworks within eight weeks. However, the potholes are still there.

Mr Atkins told the Bury Free Press that Matthew Riches, western area highways manager, spoke to him about the matter just before Christmas.

“He told me he would do us a favour and get some asphalt put in the holes as a gesture of goodwill and he said he was not going to contact Zurich (the insurance company) to say the damage was the council’s fault, which means I can’t claim for the Au200 the car repairs cost me,” he said.

“Their rules say a green lane does not requite any maintenance and if I choose to live up there it’s my choice. But what happens if I can’t get to my house?”

Mr Atkins acknowledged that the council did fill in one pothole after the Bury Free Press ran a report in October, but the holes were still so bad the milkman and refuse collectors would not drive down the lane and the postman had complained.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk County Council said this week: “The highways team has been gearing up to respond to any emergency road repairs following this current bad weather. Naturally, potholes are caused and worsened by freezing and thawing of the road surface and the current extreme weather conditions are likely to present additional issues to contend with once the temperatures begin to rise again

Md. General Assembly clamps down on payday loan rates

Md. General Assembly clamps down on payday loan rates

Daily Record, The (Baltimore), Apr 6, 2010 by Nicholas Sohr

The General Assembly has approved tighter restrictions for payday lenders, closing a loophole that state financial regulators say allowed financial services companies to charge more than 600 percent interest on some loans.

The bill, H.B. 79, passed the Senate 47-0 late Monday night and now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature. The House of Delegates passed the bill 106-29 on March 19.

“This legislation really underscores the administration’s commitment to protect Maryland citizens from unfair business practices,” said Alexander M. Sanchez, secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

“Maximum interest rates have been in Maryland law for many years, and we’re gratified that the General Assembly is reinforcing those for the benefit of consumers,” he added.

State law sets a 33 percent cap on the annual interest rate on loans up to $6,000

Swine flu remedy warning

Swine flu remedy warning

0 Comments | Nottingham Evening Post, Nov 5, 2009

A NOTTINGHAM firm is producing its own homeopathic remedy to treat patients with swine flu.

In Vivo Health, in New Basford, says the naturally-produced remedy can be taken by mouth as an alternative to being immunised – but a top city GP says there is no evidence the product will work.

In Vivo is run by Russian-born consultant Alla Cranham, who says the treatment can prevent and cure the H1N1 virus.

She said: “The serum is very diluted – but this doesn’t change its effectiveness. Like all homeopathic remedies, it is very gentle and easily absorbed by the body.”

GP Ian Trimble, chairman of Nottingham’s Professional Executive Committee, said he would “discourage” patients from using such remedies for swine flu. He said: “There is no significant evidence that they work. “If they have this and depend on it to protect them, there is the risk they may suffer the consequences.

That would be the conventional advice we would give as GPs.”

The homeopathic remedy is produced by creating a diluted version of an existing flu strain.

LOAN BEHOLD YOUR MONEY

LOAN BEHOLD YOUR MONEY

0 Comments | Daily Mirror, The; London (UK), Jul 28, 2010 | by Tricia Phillips

GETTING finance for your business can be one of the most difficult parts of setting up and running a small business. The Labour Government launched the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme in 2009 to help small businesses obtain a loan when they don’t have security to offer, such as a house or other assets. It provides loans from pounds 1,000 up to pounds 1million.

The good news is that a further pounds 200m has been put into the scheme by the current Government.

But it has been criticised for being too hard to obtain.

Bobby Lane, small business expert at Shelley Stock Hutter says: “Many small businesses are their own worst enemy and are failing at the first hurdle by not having the right information in place, such as business plans, projections and management accounts.

“We recently helped to secure a pounds 1m EFG loan for an IT business that was looking to expand. For the right business with the right plans, I believe the scheme is a good option.”

BOBBY’S TIPS

You’ve got to be prepared as you only have one shot to impress the bank.

It’s important to have all the information that they will require immediately available. That information should include:

1 A clear, well-researched business plan that shows why the loan is needed and how it will be used.

2 Three year projections for the business of profit/loss, assets & liabilities and cash requirements

First you need to learn everything there

First you need to learn everything there is to learn about your business, from what products you sell and their benefits to what type of specials your business is having for the month.

When you advertise you want to think like a consumer, the ad needs to be short yet catch their attention!

You only have a few seconds to get their attention and have them click through to read your entire ad and then proceed to click through to your site.

So how do you do this?

First you need a catchy headline/subject line!

Take yourself out of the ?selling? mode, you need to think like you are a consumer who is looking for an item. Remember you have to already know your niche market, otherwise you will be doing all this work for nothing!

Say you sell cosmetics, what as a consumer are you looking for? Natural products, a sale, a buy one get one etc? What does your product offer that is different from your competition, if you have to go to your competitions website and compare the products what does your product offer that is better than the competition? Better value, more for the money, natural products, can you offer better customer satisfaction or better customer service?

. We rarely travel overseas because my husband is a teacher and so we are limited to school holidays. Prices inevitably rise then and all the special deals usually seem to be aimed at families. Do you have any good suggestions for reasonably priced school holiday trips for the childless?

A. The South Pacific is a fantastic place to visit at any time. There are many different islands and properties that are adult only, or you can stay at a larger resort which has adult areas for exclusive dining.

Vanuatu offers a couple of smaller properties that are either adult only or have adult only areas and would be a great choice.

We’d recommend Mangoes Resort as a peaceful escape designed exclusively for adults. Only a 10-minute stroll from town, you can relax and enjoy your Vanuatu experience. The stand-alone bungalows are spacious and have private balconies

Best of the baristas

Best of the baristas

Philadelphia Daily News, March, 2007 by APRIL LISANTE

IT’S A TYPICAL weekday morning, and you saunter into your corner coffee shop to place your order: “I’ll take a decaf, skim, no whip, extra foam, double-shot soy latte, please.”

While you wander away to decide whether you want a croissant or scone, what happens behind the barista’s counter is nothing short of pure art and science, skill that takes years to perfect – if a barista-in-training ever manages to perfect it at all.

To get your specialty coffee to taste just the way you like it, baristas have two minutes behind an unforgiving, high-tech coffee machine to “flush the group head,” “clear the portafilter,” “dose and tamp” 14 ounces of espresso grinds, make sure it brews in about 15 seconds, then “stretch” the milk until it reaches 150 degrees.

Sound…
